SIBOL MLBB team playoff-bound after wins vs. Morocco, Malaysia in IESF WEC ’24
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — SIBOL’s national Mobile Legends: Bang Bang team secures the top seed in Group B of the IESF World Esports Championship 2024 – MLBB tournament after wins against Morocco and Malaysia on Wednesday (PH time).
The national team, composed of the core team of MDL Philippines outfit RRQ Kaito with Falcons AP.Bren’s Michael Angelo “PHI.Sayson” Sayson and coach Francis “Ducky” Glindro, competed as one of the favorites as they aimed for the two-peat.
SIBOL was too much for the Moroccans in the first series as the former gave the latter a 2-0 beatdown in an off-stream affair Wednesday dawn, prompting a match against the Malaysians who defeated the United States in another series.
It was a close affair in Game 1 between the Filipinos and the Malaysians as Sayson suited up for the jungler role in place of Gabriel Guinto, with the game ending in under 15 minutes.
Sayson’s Hayabusa put up nine kills and four assists to lead the way while Carl Edriel ‘PHI.Gallantes” Gallantes’ Valentina grabbed three kills and assisted eight more.
The Malaysians however gave SIBOL a run for their money in Game 2 as they came back to tie the series with one game apiece.
Ealtond “Lolealz” Rayner was the star of the show with eight kills and six assists with the Harith and Muhammad Qayyum Ariffin “YumS” Bin Mohd Suhairi’s Gatotkaca secured four kills and a game-high 13 assists.
Gallantes and Cymond “PHI.Torres” Torres combined for 10 kills but was put to naught as the Malaysians rallied to the midlane to finish the game after a crucial team fight deep in the late game.
SIBOL went to full team fight mode in Game 3 as they gave Malaysia a 38-15 beatdown in 18 minutes as Sayson’s Hayabusa dished 15 kills and 14 assists to dominate the latter, while Denniel Dennison “PHI.Gomez” Gomez’s roam Jawhead assisted 18 while getting four more kills of his own.
YumS’ Gatotkaca and Muhammad Haqqullah “Sekys” Ahmad Shahrul Zaman became focal targets for SIBOL as they fell 11 and eight kills, respectively, as they were denied any map control in the entire match.
The Filipino national team will await for their opponents in the playoffs stage as Malaysia will have a rematch against the USA, who defeated Morocco in the elimination round.
