The tournament favorites ended the Day 1 festivities with an 11-minute game against MPL Indonesia champions Team Liquid ID, thumping their counterparts 15-5 and completely dominating the map from the start.

King Cyric “K1NGKONG” Perez’s Suyou pick tallied five kills and seven assists to grab the MVP nod and Frince Miguel “Super Frince” Ramirez’s signature Luo Yi pick contributed to all but one kill for FNOP as they didn’t lose a single turtle, lord, or turret the entire game.

Favian “Faviannn” Putra’s Ling became FNOP’s prime target, taking him down five times and limiting him of any takeover opportunities.

MPL-PH’s runners-up Aurora Gaming however weren’t as fortunate as they received a 17-11 loss at the hands of Myanmar’s best Falcon Esports in an almost 17-minute affair.

Jan Dominic “Domeng” del Mundo’s Moskov’s 2/1/4 KDA went to naught as Yar “Px7” Zar Mon’s Zhuxin put up seven kills and eight assists to lead the Burmese outfit.

Renejay “Renejay” Barcarse’s attempt of a roam Guinevere was squashed as the combined sustainability and damage from Falcon’s units proved to be too much even for crucial knock-offs.

Upsets after upsets

The rest of the tournament saw shockers one after the other, with the best-of-one format giving more unpredictability and pressure to both teams and fans inside the IOI Grand Exhibition & Convention Center.

Title favorites Selangor Red Giants saw themselves being shellshocked as Turkish champs S2G Esports proved their dark horse label against the hometown team, immediately throwing every possible prediction out the window.

Fellow Malaysian outfit Team Vamos were stopped off their tracks as they also suffered an upset against coach Hendrich “Lyrick” Clahi’s Twisted Minds from the Middle East region.

North American champs BloodThirstyKings gave Ahmet “Rosa” Batır and the rest of ULFHEDNAR a beatdown to start their quest, while all-Cambodian CFU Gaming pulled the rug off Singaporean outfit and fellow contenders NIP Flash.

Only Eastern Europe and Central Asia’s Team Secret and Indonesian mainstay RRQ Hoshi prevailed among the favorites in their respective matchups as they put up wins against Latin America champions Maycam Evolve and China’s KeepBest Gaming, respectively.

Interesting matchups for FNOP and RORA

Fnatic ONIC will meet Cambodia’s CFU in the second round, with both teams fielding homegrown talent in their main five and both have a history of struggles before winning their first MPL title in their respective regions.

Aurora meanwhile will face Singapore’s NIP Flash, with Jaymark “Hadess” Lazaro and Jankurt “KurtTzy” Matira going head-t0-head against Jonard Cedrix “Demonkite” Caranto and Kenneth “Yue” Tadeo in their respective lanes.
