Team Liquid PH completes sweep over Aurora, retains MPL PH title
PASAY — Aurora Gaming enters the grand finals riding a 15-match win streak that began against Team Liquid PH last August. But three months later, it was the the same team who flipped the script and dimmed the Northern Lights on the biggest stage.
The Cavalry completed their back-to-back arc in dominant fashion, sweeping Aurora Gaming 4–0 to capture the MPL Philippines Season 16 championship on Sunday inside the Cuneta Astrodome.
A Familiar Rivalry, a Different Result
The Cavalry struck first with a 22-minute Game 1 victory, dismantling Aurora 21–6. Kiel “Oheb” Soriano’s Harith delivered a flawless 12/0/6 KDA.
Meanwhile, Aurora’s Jonard Cedrix “Demonkite” Caranto’s Fredrinn struggled to find footing, ending at 1/7/2.
Aurora banked on comfort picks in Game 2, giving Kenneth “Yue” Tadeo his Cecilion and Jan Dominic “Domengkite” del Mundo his Harith. However, Team Liquid PH dominated from start to finish, closing the game 20–8 in 19 minutes.
Oheb’s Granger erupted for 12/0/5, while Jaypee “Jaypee” dela Cruz’s Hilda dictated the pace with 2/3/9 and key rotations.
Unrelenting Momentum
Momentum fully swung in TLPH’s favor by Game 3, as Aurora faltered under the Cavalry’s pressure. Dylan “Light” Catipon’s Hylos went 0/6/1, while Jaypee once again orchestrated the tempo with a 0/1/11 performance on Gatotkaca.
Aurora could only take two kills as TLPH claimed nearly every objective in a 14-minute rout.
The Northern Lights showed more resistance in Game 4, but Team Liquid’s veteran leadership shone through. Jaypee’s Hilda continuously pushed the bottom lane, forcing Aurora to split their focus.
Despite losing the Lord in the 16th minute, Alston “Sanji” Pabico’s Luo Yi pulled off a brilliant Diversion play straight to Aurora’s exposed base — sealing the championship before the Northern Lights could react.
Back-to-Back Glory for the Cavalry
With the sweep, Team Liquid PH pocketed US$35,000 in base prize money plus their regular season earnings. Aurora settled for US$20,000+ after their stellar campaign.
Veteran roamer Jaypee earned the Finals MVP honors, averaging 1.25 kills, 1.5 deaths, and 10.25 assists per game — and an additional US$1,000 in prize money.
The Cavalry now set their sights on January’s M7 World Championship, where they aim to complete MLBB’s first-ever Golden Road run. They’ll also represent the Philippines in the MLBB event at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games this December.
Aurora, meanwhile, will look to bounce back as they prepare for the Games of the Future 2025 tournament later this year in Dubai.
