Intense Semi-Finals Round in NBA 2KL APAC Invitational
Manila, Philippines – The word “intense” is the perfect descriptor for the nail-biting semi-final contests in the NBA 2KL APAC Invitational. The two semi-final matches, LGE Eagles vs. Team Lock Up and LGE Agila vs. No Way Out, lived up to this description, delivering edge-of-the-seat action for basketball and esports fans alike.
LGE Eagles vs. Team Lock Up
The first semi-final match featured the LGE Eagles squaring off against Team Lock Up. Representing the Philippines, the LGE Eagles consisted of a mix of UAAP players and veteran NBA 2K players from the local scene. On the other side, Team Lock Up, featuring a blend of NBA 2KL veterans and young talent from down under, aimed to prove their worth on the international stage.
The game started with the LGE Eagles firing on all cylinders, setting a frantic pace that put Team Lock Up on the defensive right from the tip-off. Despite a strong comeback attempt led by Baldinho, Team Lock Up struggled to match the Eagles’ intensity and precision. The Eagles maintained their composure, sticking to their game plan, and ultimately secured a convincing victory in the first game.
In the second game, Team Lock Up tried to contain the Eagles’ explosive start. Once again, the Eagles soared ahead with a quick start, putting their opponents on the backfoot. Strategic three-pointers and a steadfast defense saw the Eagles clinch the second game, sealing their place in the finals with an impressive showing.
LGE Agila vs. No Way Out
The second semi-final was a high-stakes battle between the defending champions, No Way Out, and LGE Agila. This match had a history, with some LGE Agila players seeking revenge after a previous defeat by No Way Out.
In the first match, LGE Agila came out strong, shooting lights out from beyond the arc. Their aggressive play and emotional drive overwhelmed No Way Out, leading to a one-sided game that saw Agila claim the first victory.
The second game saw a dramatic turn of events. While LGE Agila continued their hot streak initially, No Way Out made crucial adjustments, particularly in defending Agila’s guards. Led by their captain, Mona, and leveraging effective pick-and-roll plays, No Way Out managed to clamp down on Agila’s offensive threats. This strategic shift allowed them to secure the second game, tying the series at 1-1.
The third and final game was a true test of nerves and skill. With the championship berth on the line, both teams put forth their best efforts. Agila’s guards diversified their tactics, driving the lane and converting inside shots. No Way Out, sticking to their reliable pick-and-roll strategy, kept the game tightly contested. With less than 18 seconds on the clock and the score tied, No Way Out’s captain nailed a buzzer-beater three-pointer from the wing, securing a dramatic victory and advancing to the finals.
Post Match Interviews
We met up with Ian Saranilla general manager of LGE about his thoughts on the Intense Semi Finals Round.
Q: First question, one of the two teams made it to the finals, how does it feel?
A: Yeah, for me it’s bittersweet because we really wanted a Philippines vs Philippines finals but as you saw, it was a great game. We lost by a last shot, last last-second shot. So at the end of the day, it’s still good for the community and it really shows how much effort the teams have given to reach this point today.
Q: So tomorrow, the Eagles will be placing No Way Out. Any extra motivation on the part of the Eagles to beat No Way Out?
A: Yeah, I think this helps because at the end of the day, although there are two different teams, we’re one LGE, we’re one company, we’re a bit together. And what hurts team Aguila hurts the Eagles as well. So yung kaagad na sabi nila, when they got back here, ah boss, babawian namin bukas. Yung kaagad ang sinabi nila.
Q: Considering that No Way Out is the defending APAC Invitational Champions, do you think there was added pressure for Aguilas to try and take down the defending champions?
A: I think pressure is really part of the industry. It’s part of what we do. And it’s a constant thing. This is a very competitive industry that we’re in. And I think it adds, but sometimes, I think it’s not a lack of preparation that happens. It’s yung talaga breaks of the game. It was a last-shot thing. The other team got the momentum late in the fourth quarter. But again, we lick our wounds, but we come back stronger after this.
